Lately, Josh has been showing interest in coffee and has all kinds of questions for connoisseurs. The only way he likes it is FULL of sugar and milk (i'm talking disgustingly sweet). But since we're in an area of the world the takes coffee very seriously we thought it'd be the perfect time to introduce him to good coffee. I like my coffee black and strong so I didn't really know where to start with him. So while we were out and about, we stopped by stumptown and I ordered him a cappuccino. And well, this is how it went...

I guess we started off too strong. I think next time we'll go with a french press with some milk and a LITTLE sugar. I'll keep you updated on the process... ha!

  1. Aw, poor guy! I used to hate coffee and now I have it like, 3 times a day. It's weird how quickly it changes... a sure sign you're getting older, I suppose. ;)

  2. Ha! derrick is the same way! He's a "2 parts cream and one part coffee" kind of guy. I like my coffee black too.

  3. hahaha... love the facial! my boy started out on mochas... they seemed to be a nice way to ease him into it.

Although, I do have friends that started out drinking long blacks, and then cappuccinos taste sweet and delicious in comparison!

  4. oooh, shoulda got him a latte first! Gotta water down that espresso :)

  5. I agree with the mocha comment! Still with espresso, but the flavor of the chocolate will compliment the bitterness in a way that hopefully pleases his taste buds! Just sweet enough, but eases a non-coffee drinker into an addict!

  6. Yeah, definitely a latte! With some flavor, french press would probably go over worse than a cappuccino, it's way stronger! This is coming from someone who used to loathe coffee. And a Stumptown flavored latte wouldn't be sickeningly sweet. Lots of real coffee drinkers even hate it black!

love those faces. what a progression.

I like my coffee black with some sweet, nothing milky or too fancy.

  8. Haha oh man. I used to be like that as well.

But now, I dig Vietnamese coffee super strong over ice. So good.

  9. This is the exact same face my boyfriend makes when he drinks seltzer! This is too funny! I deff agree to start him off with mocha or lattes-with lots of flavoring.

  10. Maybe you should try 2/3 of milk, a splash of creamer and 1/3 of (not too strong) coffee or half a shot of espresso. That works for me ;)

  11. He could try a latte with less espresso, to ease him into the bitterness of the coffee part. Also, if you go to a real coffee joint, you can always ask for the espresso shots to be pulled restretto style...it brings out more of the subtle sweetness that is in lots of espresso, instead of so much of the bitter qualities.
Another drink he might try is a cafe au lait.......it is 1/2 steamed milk and 1/2 drip coffee. It is a good starting point if you are trying to not use sugar.
I am a coffee nerd, and I work in a coffee shop!

  12. Fletcher won't even try anything with any type of coffee flavor so at least Josh is willing to try it! I'm still working on Fletcher though...maybe someday haha!

  13. I think he should try something with a shot or two of flavoring. I usually like vanilla. I don't like/drink coffee, but every once in a while I need to or I grab a cup with friends. I usually do a vanilla latte (I also do cappuccino, but I get why some people can't handle that). I find that with the vanilla flavoring, I don't need sugar, and then I don't end up dumping a million packets in there. Plus, then it tastes a little more like vanilla something or other and a little less like coffee.

  14. Can I just say that your hair looks gorgeous! I love how your hair and skin contrast with your outfit so much!

And you're quite lucky that he's trying to inch his way into coffee, my husband avoids it like the plague!

  15. I am thrilled to find another Portland blogger. :) My beau and I have sunk a tiny fortune in Stumptown's caffeinated delights! I love to order a cappuccino and sprinkle sugar on the foam and let it crystallize. My fella? He's a sugar-free vanilla breve latte! In a lot of ways he's sweeter than I. ;)

  16. It's funny, in Australia (Where I live) the whole point of a cappucino is that it has chocolate sprinkles on the top. We'd call that a flat white.
Your hair is amazing, by the way!

  17. If you guys ever go to Chicago, you have to go to Wormhole Coffee! They do latte art and every drink I've had (expect the iced drinks) has had a pretty design on it like the one in Kyle's drink. And, there are lots of cute things to take pictures of.

Plan a road trip. You won't forget it. =]

  19. I think brown sugar is a good gateway from sweet coffee drinks to a more pure coffee flavor. But every coffee bean tastes different, too. I can pull a set of shots, open the front door, and pull another set, and they will taste different based on air pressure, temperature, humidity, etc. Stumptown offers a lot of education about coffee; try to make it to a public cupping if you can.

  20. too funny! i've seen that look on my hub's face too... every time he tests my coffee to see if he suddenly likes coffee;)

  21. I am coffee obsessed and Stumptown beans are my very favorite. A friend brought me back a bag a few years ago and I've been hooked ever since! I wish we had a Stumptown in Phoenix, I would be there every day!

I feel the same way you do about coffee! I like it strong and black! That capp and your iced coffee looks so good!
